As I prepped for a busy week with back-to-back coaching sessions, rebranding work, and developing my first product, I suddenly realized: I had forgotten to breathe.

Not entirely, but my breath had become shallow, rapid, and barely noticeable.

So, I returned to breathing fully. And as I did, I felt an immediate shift in my body and mind.

Physical relief.

Calmness in thoughts.

Mindful presence.

It reminded me how easy it is to disconnect from our breath, especially in those high-stress moments.

Yet, our breath is always with us. It's a potent resource for regulating our nervous system and reconnecting with our body's wisdom.

As we move through August—a time for slowing down and soaking in the last moments of summer—use this time to reconnect with your breath and yourself.

Bold experiment of the week
— mindful eating for body literacy

Ready to befriend your breath? Here's a simple breath awareness practice to see how your breaths impact your state of being:

  1. Set a timer for 3 minutes.
  2. Find a comfortable seated position.
  3. Close your eyes or soften your gaze.
  4. Take note of your mental, emotional, and physical state.
  5. Without changing anything, observe your natural breath.
  6. Notice where you feel your breath in your body. Is it in your nose, chest, or belly?
  7. Pay attention to the quality of your breath. Is it shallow or deep? Fast or slow?
  8. As your mind wanders—because that's what minds do—gently bring your attention back to your breath.
  9. After 3 minutes, take a moment to notice how you feel. What's your state now?

Try this practice daily for a week. I recommend right when you wake up, start your work day, between meetings, or before bed.

There's no goal to change anything. The goal is to notice any changes in your stress levels, focus, or overall wellbeing and how they impact your breathing (and vice versa).
