This week, I've been reflecting on a growing topic with my clients:

the deep desire to reconnect with their bodies, paired with the question mark about where to start.

It's brought me back to my own journey—which started 19 years ago—sitting on my bed in rural Wisconsin forcing myself to meditate. I remember negative self-talk galore, striving to notice physical sensations, and resisting stillness.

It felt so hard.

My body and mind were operating on different frequencies.

But, with consistency, trial and error, and continual upskilling, I was able to cultivate life-changing, body-mind mastery.

I've been guiding my clients and companies to do the same. It's been so cool, because it's in the smallest of ways, like:

  • Noticing the quality of breath
  • Mapping physical sensations in the body
  • Linking physical sensations to emotions
  • Offering kind permission to start wherever you are
  • Slowing down to speed up (this one is huge!)

So as we move into the last part of the year—with school starting, work targets pressure, and holiday travel coming up—take some time to slow down.

Body-mind mastery is the practice of:

  1. cultivating a deep connection between physical sensations, emotions, and thoughts.
  2. regulating the nervous system to reclaim calm, create stress resilience, and design a life you love.

It's not meditation. It's a holistic approach to understanding and rewiring your entire being—the body and the mind.

Research shows that our bodies are key to processing stress and emotions. By cultivating strong interoception and regulation skills, you can level up body and self-awareness and emotional regulation.

Cool, right?

Well, the benefits reach past personal wellbeing, too.

From the lens of work, increasing body awareness in the workplace can reduce team burnout and stress, and boost job satisfaction, performance, team culture, and productivity.

Bold experiment of the week
— calm compass practice

Ready to start the journey of body-mind mastery? Try the Calm Compass practice.

This practice helps you understand the connection between your emotions and physical sensations, a key aspect of body-mind mastery. Here's how:

  1. Set a timer for 3 minutes.
  2. Close your eyes and recall a recent positive experience.
  3. As you re-experience this moment, notice where you feel sensations in your body. Is there warmth in your chest? Relaxation in your shoulders? There's no right or wrong—allow whatever needs to show up, to show up—even if it's nothing.
  4. Now, set the timer for another 3 minutes.
  5. Think of a challenging situation you're currently facing.
  6. Notice how your body responds. Is there tension anywhere? A change in your breathing? Again, allow whatever needs to show up, to show up. There's no need to change anything.
  7. Then fill out your body-mind map and reflect on how different emotional states created distinct physical sensations in the body.

With consistent practice—there's no hacking the nervous system—you'll be able to use your body's signals as a tool for emotional regulation and stress resilience.
